3 Days Nyungwe Primate Safari
This is a 3 days chimpanzee trekking adventure in Nyungwe Forest, a tropical rainforest with 13 different primates species in Rwanda!
Nyungwe, in South West of Rwanda, is a huge afro-montane forest. With over 10000sq.km in size, Nyungwe is the undisputed giant in Central Africa. The natural forest is renowned for its large troops of colobus monkeys, chimpanzees, butterflies and a rich variety of orchids. Over 300 bird species have been recorded. While there, stay at the Nyungwe Top View Hotel.
The terrain in Nyungwe Forest is rugged and steep, and you will be at relatively high elevation, and it can rain at any time of the trek so come with appropriate clothing. Visit some cultural sites en route – the Museum in Butare and the palace at Nyanza. This tour is for nature lovers, lovers of culture – travellers who want to see as much of African culture as possible and combine it with chimps.
Day 1, Arrival and Transfer to Nyungwe forest
After breakfast you will depart for Butare the second largest city of Rwanda and is regarded as the intellectual city of Rwanda. It hosts the National Museum, several academic (University) and research institutions. On your way to Butare you will visit Nyanza (currently Nyabisindu) the former Omwami’s palace (King’s palace) and the seat of the feudal monarchy. The palace has been reconstructed to its 19th century state and shows a traditional dome that can be compared with the Kabaka’s palace of Buganda. You will visit the National Museum which is one the well set-up if not the finest ethnographic museum of East Africa. It’s a good source of information on the cultural history of Rwanda and the region.
Lunch at Butare and later we will drive to Nyungwe Forest National Park. Your driver-guide will stop at the Uwinka offices to have the last update on the presence of the semi-habituated groups of chimps and colobus monkeys. This will help you to prepare your activities of the next day.

Day 2, Chimpanzee tracking
Today, we will go for chimpanzee tracking. Chimpanzees at Cyamudongo forest (about 30 individuals), 1h30, four wheel drive from Gisakura Guest House. The tracking starts at 5am from Gisakura office.
The forest is also good for bird watchers since it’s a habitat for about 300 species with 27 endemics in Albertine rift

Day 3: Departure
After breakfast and your lodge in the morning, we will then drive back to Kigali and on arrival you will go for a city tour or transfer to airport for your international onward flight.
